Children & Domestic Violence

Children who have witnessed abuse at home react in different ways.

Children sometimes feel as though they are to blame for the abuse or for the separation of their parents. Some children may experience feelings of isolation, shame or guilt. Other children may take on some adult responsibilities prematurely. The reactions and feelings of children vary widely, but Gateway offers programs to help children deal with their feelings and gives them an opportunity to express their fears and concerns.
